October 20th was the 30th birthday of MUD.
MUD stands for “Multi User Dungeon”, one of the precursors of today MMORPG (like Warhammer Online and World of Warcraft).
Here you can find a very good essay by Richard Bartle, co-creator of MUD. I never played MUD, since my first online test was on Ultima Online (where I was killed many times when out of the city trying to gather some raw materials…), but in my opinion the anecdote is much more useful for “young” players.
If you aren’t interested in videogames history and you like much more human beings, you may find interesting “Life on the Screen: Identity in the Age of the Internet” by Sherry Turkle, where the psychologist analyzes representation of self on virtual worlds (in Turkle’s experience, a MUD).
Note: I’m still searching Turkle books on local libraries, I can’t say how much deeper the book goes on the subject.
